They are very different to a porcupine - porcupines are actually rodents whereas the echidna is an ancient type of marsupial. Additionally, echidna cannot eject their spines, whereas a porcupine can. The North American porcupine ( Erethizon dorsatum) is the largest in the family, usually weighing less than 7 kg (15.4 pounds), though males occasionally grow significantly larger.
